WORKSHOP MODULE NUMBER ONE
This workshop presents an overview of the spectrum disorder of autism and basic principles of Applied Behavior Analysis.
Topics include:
- What is Applied Behavior Analysis?
- Common characteristics of autism
- Diagnosis and theories of causation
- Founding research establishing ABA as an effective treatment
- Principles of the Behavior Modification Theory
- Errorless teaching and error correction procedures
- Generalization of acquired skills
- Conducting a task analysis
- Reducing problem behaviors
- Managing self-stimulatory behaviors
- Teaching language: verbal, sign, and alternative communication systems
WORKSHOP MODULE NUMBER TWO
This workshop introduces Verbal Behavior programming for the development of language in persons with autism. The emphasis of this workshop is to provide hands-on practice using ABA teaching techniques to teach all of the verbal operants to a variety of learners.
Topics include:
- Terminology review from Workshop Module #1
- Basics of Discrete Trial Teaching
- The 5 Verbal Operants
- Teaching language across all the operants
- Using the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills by Partington and Sundburg to chart learner progress.
- Mand training – the foundation for all language development
- Tracking learner progress daily, weekly, and quarterly through data recording.
WORKSHOP MODULE NUMBER THREE
This workshop focuses on ensuring good teaching procedures and data collection methods. An in-depth look at problem behavior and how to choose effective interventions is also presented.
Topic include:
- Review of terminology
- Creating willing learners
- Evaluating teaching effectiveness
- Reducing learner errors
- Promoting retention of mastered information
- Analysis of problem behavior
- Choosing a behavioral intervention
- Data collection procedures to track effectiveness of a behavior intervention
WORKSHOP MODULE NUMBER FOUR
This workshop is discussion based, presenting a detailed description of ABA programming for all levels of learners and providing further guided practice of teaching procedures. Participants will learn how to create a therapeutic environment for their children as well as how to incorporate other therapies the child might already receive. Topics include:
- Terminology review
- A guide to early, intermediate, and advanced programming and skills
- Transferring skills to the community
- Analysis of severe problem behavior and interventions
- Setting up the therapy environment
- Collaboration with other professionals to incorporate other therapies
- Designing an IEP with ABA goals and objectives
- How to involve parents in ABA programming for consistency at home
- Intensive guided practice of teaching procedures
